Hi-Hard Corporation manufactures through hardened products using modified 400 series stainless steel, which is then heated to austenitizing temperature, air quenched, and tempered to achieve a desired hardness level (up to 60 HSD). As a result of this manufacturing process, our through hardened rollers are able to withstand elevated temperature applications, war conditions, corrosion, and general impact. We currently feature through hardened rollers up to 20" in diameter, 120" in length, and up to 46 RC. We also offer tool steel rolls up to 10" in diameter, 175" in length, and up to 62 RC. To learn more about Hi-Hard Corporation's through hardened rollers and tool steel rolls, including our high temperature alloy quench and tempered rolls, please peruse the information below or contact us for details.

General Capabilities

THROUGH HARDENED PRODUCTS

Through hardened stainless steel
The Hi-Hard through hardened product is manufactured using modified 400 series stainless steel. The material is heated to austenitizing temperature, air quenched, and tempered to desired hardness level (up to 60 HSD). This material is used in elevated temperature applications where the roll is exposed to severe temperature changes, war conditions, corrosion, and impact.

Materials Used

400 Series Stainless

Heat Treatment

Quench and tempered: 40/50 HSD ; 50/60 HSD - Material is harden through entire wall

Roll sizes

Diameter: Up to 20"
Length: Up to 120"

Roll types (Normally in Hot Strip Applications)

Table Rolls

Damming Rolls
Scale Breaker Rolls

Hi temperature alloy quench and tempered rolls

Rolls manufactured from this HI-TEMP ALLOY material can be made in solid or fabrications. These rolls typically have hardness levels up to 430 BHN and are used in applications where roll is subject to high temperature material processing and an elevated temperature environment. These material offer strength, toughness, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, and temperature cycling properties.

Materials Used

Nickel, Chrome, Molybdenum Alloy

Heat Treatment

Quench and tempered: 33-37 Rc / 38-42 Rc / 43-46 Rc

Roll sizes

Diameter: Up to 20"
Length: Up to 120"

Roll types

Caster Rolls
Scale Breaker Rolls
Pinch Rolls

Quench and tempered rolls

Rolls manufactured for quench and tempered materials can be made as solid for fabrications. These rolls typically have hardness up to 321 BHN and offer high core mechanical properties. These products are used where hi strength, toughness, and durability are of concern and wear is not a major issue.

Materials Used

4140, 4340, 1045

TOOL STEEL ROLLS - THROUGH HARDENED

Process

Cable and hoist drums are manufactured using 8620 forged steel. The drums are machined and carburized to achieve a uniform 1/8" case depth in the rung area of the drum. The units are then quench and double tempered to 60 Rc. The drum will then be fabricated and machined complete to drawing. The unit will have a through shaft installed and the gear mounted per customer requirements.

Materials Used

Tool Steel: D2, DC53, A2

Heat Treatment

Material is quench and tempered to customer specifications.
Typical hardness required 58/60 Rc ; 60/62 Rc
