Hi-Hard Corporation specializes in an array of case hardened rolls which are manufactured from a variety of carbon and alloy steels. To increase the rolls hardness and resistance to wear we utilize variours processes in heat treatment. At Hi-Hard we're proud to feature a hardness levels up to 65 Rc, case depths upto 3/8" per side, and our case hardened rollers can be manufactured in any shape or size, in both solid and fabricated designs. We offer several categories of case hardened rollsers and related products, including:

Case Hardening of Rollers Capabilities

General Capabilities

CARBURIZED AND HARDENED ROLLS - CASE HARDENED

Process
The Hi-Hard deep case carburized and hardened product is primarily made from low carbon alloy steel. This process can achieve up to 3/8" case depth per side and hardness levels up to 65 Rc. Rolls can be made from any shape or size in solid and fabricated designs.

Materials Used

Alloy steel: 8620, 9310, 4620, 4320 Types: Bar, Forged, Cast, Tube

Heat Treatment

CASE DEPTH: 3/8" 1/4" 1/8"
HARDNESS: Up to 65 Rc - Draw back to lower hardness levels through tempering

CASE HARDENED - FLAME AND INDUCTION HARDENED PRODUCTS

Process

Flame and induction hardened product is primarily made from medium carbon, medium carbon alloy steel, high carbon alloy, iron, and stainless steel.
This process can achieve up to 1/4" case depth per side and hardness levels up to 65 Rc. Rolls can be made from any shape or size in solid and fabricated designs.

Alloy steel: 1045, 4140, 4150, 52100, 6150, 400 SS, Iron

Heat Treatment

Flame hardening: case depth 3/32" - 1/8" per side
Induction Hardening: up to 1/4" plus per side

HEAT TRANSFER ROLLS

Process

Heat transfer rolls are fabricated and made using two components. These components include an outer shell and an internal roll core. The outer shell can be produced with a hardened or non-hardened surface. The internal roll core can be produced with a machined fluid passage, spiral welded fluid passage, or hollow internal cavity for fluid passage.

Alloy steel: 8620, 9310, 4620, 4320
Stainless Steel: 300 series / 400 series
Carbon Steel: 1026

Heat Treatment

Heat transfer rolls can be heat treated to required hardness and depth specifications depending on material. Non heat treated can also be used.

Design Types

MACHINED FLUID PASSAGE
Mandrel is machined with grooved pattern for fluid to transfer through. This design offers he best thermo transfer response.
Roll shell can be re-sleeved on this item.

SPIRAL WELDED FLUID PASSAGE

Mandrel is fabricated with welded bar to create fluid channel. This design offer excellent thermo transfer response.
This design is less costly to produce. Roll shell can be re-sleeved on this item.

HOLLOW TYPE

Mandrel or roll is design for fluid to enter to bored cavity and exit opposite end. This design has good thermo transfer response.
This roll design has the lowest initial cost of all designs.


CABLE / HOIST DRUMS AND COMPONENTS

Process

Cable and hoist drums are manufactured using 8620 forged steel. The drums are machined and carburized to achieve a uniform 1/8" case depth in the rung area of the drum. The units are then quench and double tempered to 60 Rc. The drum will then be fabricated and machined complete to drawing. The unit will have a through shaft installed and the gear mounted per customer requirements.

For Carburized: 8620 steel - Forged
For Flame Hardened: 1045 Steel

Heat Treatment

Carburized and case hardened up to 1/8" case depth at 60-62 Rc.
Flame hardened drums have 0.090" case at 55-58 Rc

Diameter: Up to 36"
Length: Up to 175"

Advantages of 8620 carburized and hardened carburized drum

The 8620 drum is manufactured using forged sleeve vs a rolled and welded plate design commonly used in flame hardened drums.
The carburized 1/8" case depth is uniform throughout the rung area on the drum. (See illustration) The quench process requires the drum to be evenly heated to temperature which results in a uniform hardness within the groove.
